Calcasieu Parish service areas
We take demolition requests from across the parish. Who issues the permit depends on whether the property is inside a city or town or on unincorporated land, so find your place below.
City, town or parish
The first question for any permit.
Inside the limits of a city or town, the demolition permit comes from that city or town. On unincorporated land the parish is the authority, and the one parish demolition order we found refers to development permits as well. Fees, forms and notice periods change, so this page does not list them. Ask the office before a start date is set.
Separately from any permit, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) expects an asbestos notification before a demolition. That applies in every place below; see asbestos before demolition.
Not sure whether an address is inside city limits? Put it in your request and ask each contractor to confirm which office applies.
Lake Charles
City
Inside the city, the City of Lake Charles building permits cover removal, relocation and demolition. Confirm the current fee and paperwork with the city Permit Center before work starts.
Lake Charles is also where the blighted-property process applies. City officials described it in 2024: an inspection, a certified notice to the owner, council review, then a 30-day window to get a repair permit. If nothing is done, the city bids the demolition, which they said can take three to six months. An owner who would rather demolish than repair can ask for quotes early; give contractors the dates on the notice.
The best-known job here is the former Capital One Tower. It sat vacant after Hurricane Laura in 2020, demolition began in June 2024 on the shorter connected section, and the 22-story tower was imploded in September 2024. The city secured $7 million in private money for the work. Most jobs are far smaller: see house demolition, storm-damaged buildings and commercial demolition.
Sulphur
City
Within Sulphur city limits, ask the city about its demolition permit; outside them, the parish. The jobs owners tend to need quoted in a town like this are houses damaged in the 2020 storms and never repaired, old garages and sheds, and slabs left behind after a teardown.
Sulphur is one of the places you can pick directly in the request form. If the job is a whole lot rather than one building, see site clearing.
Westlake
City
Inside Westlake city limits, the permit question goes to the city. Beyond them, it goes to the parish. Westlake is a form option, so choose it and add the street address if you have it; contractors use the address to check access and the lot.
For a house that is partly collapsed or has been boarded up since a storm, start with storm-damaged buildings. For a slab or driveway on its own, see concrete removal.
DeQuincy
City
Inside DeQuincy, ask the city which permit applies to a demolition. On the edge of town or beyond it, the parish is the office to check. Typical requests from places of this size are single houses, abandoned outbuildings and old concrete pads.
DeQuincy is a form option, so pick it under the property location. If you are comparing quotes, how it works lists what to compare line by line.
Iowa
Town
Iowa, Louisiana is a town, so inside its limits the town handles the demolition permit and outside them the parish does. If the town sent you a notice about a building, include its dates in the request.
Say how many garages and sheds stand on the lot so each contractor prices them; the form asks.
Vinton
Town
Inside the town of Vinton, ask the town about its permit. Outside it, check with the parish. If the building is old, an asbestos inspection with lab samples is the first step before any machine arrives; the result decides whether the LDEQ form is AAC-2a or AAC-2b.
Vinton is a form option. See house demolition for what a full teardown includes.
Moss Bluff
Unincorporated
Moss Bluff is not a city or town, so the parish is the office to ask about permits. The parish order we found, issued to one owner in 2024, required demolition within 30 days, development permits and removal of the debris. It is one order, not a general rule; read any notice you receive for its own terms.
Trees that have to come out raise a teardown price. If the lot needs clearing as well, pair the teardown with site clearing in one request so the quotes cover both.
Carlyss
Unincorporated
Carlyss is unincorporated, so permits go through Calcasieu Parish rather than a city office. Carlyss is a form option, so pick it under the property location.
On larger lots, access matters: say whether trucks can reach the building from a road or whether there is a gate, a ditch or a long drive. It changes how many truckloads and what size of machine a contractor plans. Related: concrete removal for slabs and drives.
Starks
Unincorporated
Starks is unincorporated, so the parish is the permit authority. It is not in the form's place list; choose “Other unincorporated Calcasieu Parish” and put Starks and the street address in the address field or the notes.
The jobs people ask about out here are usually a storm-damaged house, a barn or shed past repair, and the concrete left after either comes down. If a tank is buried on the property, see underground tank removal.
Grand Lake
Unincorporated
Grand Lake is unincorporated, so permits go through the parish. Choose “Other unincorporated Calcasieu Parish” in the form and name Grand Lake in the address or notes.
Where access is tight or the ground is soft, a contractor may need a smaller machine, so describe the access honestly and send photos on WhatsApp. If the house has been damaged by storms, storm-damaged buildings covers the paperwork that tends to come with it.
Outside the parish
Jennings and Welsh sit just outside Calcasieu Parish. We have no confirmed contractor coverage there, but you can still send the request: choose “Outside Calcasieu Parish” and say where the property is. Some contractors travel; others will tell you it is too far. Permits there come from that parish or town, not from Calcasieu Parish.
